Rowley Police Department Responds to Fatal Motor Vehicle Crash

ROWLEY — Chief Scott A. Dumas reports that the Rowley Police Department responded to a serious, two-vehicle crash this morning between a small car and a dump truck that resulted in the death of a motorist.

The Rowley Police Communication Center received several 911 calls at 8:15 a.m. Friday for a report of a crash at the intersection of Newburyport Turnpike and Central Street. Rowley Police, Rowley Fire, and Action Ambulance all responded to the scene.

The first arriving police officers found that a large, ten-wheel dump truck and a Toyota Prius had collided.

The operator of the Prius, who was the lone occupant of that vehicle, was found with serious injuries. Extrication and life-saving measures were attempted, however the operator was pronounced dead on scene.

The name of the driver, a 24-year-old man from Dedham, is not being released at this time, pending identification and notification of next of kin. The operator of the dump truck was not injured and remained at the scene.

Newburyport Turnpike was closed in both directions during the initial investigation, and a the roadway is expected to reopen by noon.

The crash is under investigation by the Rowley Police Department, the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis & Reconstruction Section, and the Essex County District Attorney’s Office.
