Major Water Main Break in Rowley Shuts Service to Parts of Town

ROWLEY — The Rowley Water Department, on behalf of the Rowley Water Commission, and the Rowley Police Department report that, due to a water main break, water service is temporarily shut off in parts of town.

A work crew installing a new guardrail on Rt. 1 near the Rt 133 intersection apparently struck a water main while installing the guardrail across from the McDonald’s restaurant. This resulted in a geyser of water rushing from the area for a short period of time before water department crews were able to shut down the line.

Water service is suspended from the intersection, south to the Ipswich line, and service is not expected to be resumed until late in the day or tomorrow.

The Rowley Water Department is on scene, and crews will work non-stop until the main is repaired and service is restored.

Other water customers in town may notice fluctuations in water pressure or temporary drops or loss in service, and all water customers may notice some discoloration in the water, especially when service is fully restored. Flushing your cold water lines until the water runs clear is recommended in the event of discoloration.

The water remains safe for all uses.
