Rowley Police Investigating Shooting Near Shopping Center

Man, 18, Sustains Non Life-Threatening Injuries, Does Not Appear to be Random Act of Violence

ROWLEY – Police Chief Scott A. Dumas reports that the Rowley Police Department is investigating the shooting of a teenage male on Sunday afternoon in a wooded area behind a shopping center.

Police received a call at 5:15 p.m. for a report of shots fired in the woods behind a shopping plaza located at 225 Newburyport Turnpike. Officers arrived within minutes and began to search the area.

Shortly afterward, a male party came into the Rowley Police Station reporting that he had been shot at in that vicinity. Minutes later, officers on scene were approached by an 18-year-old male who reported that he had been shot once in the leg.

The victim was transported to an area hospital where he was treated and released.

This is an active and ongoing investigation that is in its earliest stages, however Chief Dumas wishes to state that this incident does not appear to be a random act of violence, and there is reason to believe that the victim and suspect are known to each other.

Rowley Police investigators have identified a person of interest, who they believe is connected to the incident. Police are seeking to locate and question this individual at this time.

“Rowley is a safe and vibrant community, and we take any incidents of violence very seriously,” Chief Dumas said. “The investigation is ongoing, and we do not believe that there is a danger to the community.”

Rowley Police are investigating the incident and have received assistance from the Georgetown and Ipswich Police Departments and the Massachusetts State Police.

If anyone has any information about this incident, they are asked to call the Rowley Police Department at 978-948-7644.
